Last year, when my classmates were choosing their university courses, I had no idea what I wanted to do. My parents wanted me to become a doctor, because they believed that a medical career would always be in demand. I tried to live up to their hopes, but I soon realised that I was not passionate about science. Then one weekend I took a part-time job as a childminder, and everything changed. I had to put up with noise and tantrums, yet I discovered that I could get on with children very easily. Their parents praised my patience, and they asked me whether I had ever thought of becoming a teacher. At first I laughed, since many people look down on teaching as an easy job with a low salary. However, a career counsellor at my school explained that a good career depends on more than money. She advised me to take my interests, my soft skills and the job market into account before deciding. I wrote a list of my skills: I am organised, I communicate clearly, and I enjoy explaining ideas to others. Then I researched the careers that fascinate me, and I spoke with a tutor who has taught for twenty years. He told me that technology has made some jobs obsolete, but teachers will always be needed because they inspire students. He also warned me that I should cut down on distractions, because training takes hard work. I finally decided to go in for a degree in primary education, and I told my parents about it. At first they were disappointed, but after they visited my volunteer class, they agreed that I had made a wise choice. I still have doubts sometimes, but I am confident that passion and effort will carry me far.
