A Home for Sea Turtles

306 từ7 câu hỏi
Sea turtles have lived in the oceans for more than a hundred million years, yet today most species are threatened with extinction. One species, which feeds on coral reefs, is critically endangered, and experts fear that it may disappear within our lifetime. Poachers collect eggs and sell them as if they were an ordinary food, even though the law forbids it. Marine debris is another danger, because turtles often swallow plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. In addition, forest clearance near beaches destroys the spawning grounds where females lay their eggs. Conservation groups have therefore built rescue centres that care for injured animals until they can survive on their own. At one centre on the south coast, volunteers monitor the beaches every night and move the nests to a protected nursery. If the eggs stay on the open beach, they are more likely to be eaten or washed away than if they are in the nursery. After about two months, the young turtles hatch, and staff carry them to the sea as carefully as they would carry a baby. Injured adults stay in large enclosures, where vets treat their wounds and feed them a balanced diet. A turtle is released only when it is strong enough to dive as deeply as a healthy wild one. Visitors may watch the work, provided that they keep quiet and do not touch the animals. Scientists add that rescue alone will not be enough unless people also reduce plastic waste and protect the coast. Fishing nets must be changed too, because many turtles die each year after becoming trapped in them. Local schools join the effort by cleaning the beaches and teaching younger children why every species matters. As long as people keep working together, there is a real chance that sea turtles will survive for another hundred million years.
