When I arrived in the United Kingdom last September, I was full of excitement, but within a week I felt a strong sense of culture shock. Everything was different, from the food in the school canteen to the way people greet each other in the corridor. At first, I could not keep up with conversations because my classmates spoke quickly and used expressions that I had never heard. The confusion and anxiety made me want to stay in my room, which was exactly the opposite of what I needed. Fortunately, my teacher, who had lived abroad herself, advised me to join an extracurricular club. I chose the International Society, where students from more than twenty countries share their customs and traditional cuisine every Friday. Last month we held a festivity in the school hall, and I taught my new friends how to play tug of war and dance between bamboo poles. The Vietnamese bamboo dancing was the biggest surprise of the evening; even the head teacher joined in, although he kept stepping on the poles. In return, a girl from Spain cooked a speciality that I had never tasted, and a boy from Nigeria showed us his colourful costume. Through these activities, I realised that cultural diversity is not something to fear but something to appreciate. Instead of losing my identity, I have become prouder of my own culture, because people are curious about it and ask me many questions. At the same time, I have learned that people everywhere share the same basic hopes, however different their lifestyles may look. My advice to anyone who studies abroad is to be patient with yourself and to say yes to every invitation. Culture shock does not disappear overnight, but it becomes weaker each time you try something new. I no longer feel like a stranger, and I am already planning to cook a Vietnamese dinner for the whole society next month.
