Doctor Lan Pham, who was born in 1950 in a poor fishing village, has become a hero in her town because of her extraordinary life story. Her childhood was hard, since her family had almost no money and her father worked far away from home. When she was twelve, a war began in the region and her school closed, which meant that she had to stay on the farm. One afternoon, while she was helping her mother in the fields, a young nurse visited the village to teach people about first aid. The nurse described a hospital in the city, and Lan decided at once that she wanted to become a doctor. At fifteen she left her old class and travelled to the city, where she studied every night while the other children were sleeping. Three years later she finished school with excellent marks, although she had never owned a single new book. During the resistance war she joined a military hospital and worked there for five years, taking care of wounded soldiers. The soldiers trusted her because she was kind, calm and brave in every situation. One night the enemy attacked the camp while she was operating on a young soldier, but she refused to leave him until the operation was over. After the war she carried out research on cancer and published many articles that helped hospitals treat patients more safely. She also trained young nurses in remote villages, and many of them still remember her lessons with gratitude. Although she never married, she adopted two orphans, who later became doctors themselves. Her old school now has a small museum that displays her notebooks, her uniform and the lamp she used to study by. Doctor Lan passed away in 2019, yet her achievements continue to inspire the younger generation. Many students say that her determination, rather than her talent, is what they admire most about her.
