Why Our Planet Is Getting Warmer

243 từ7 câu hỏi
Global warming, the gradual rise in the average temperature of the Earth, is one of the most serious problems facing humanity today. Scientists explain that the atmosphere contains gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, which trap heat close to the surface of the planet. Without these heat-trapping gases, the Earth would be too cold for most living things. The problem begins when human activity adds far more gas than the natural balance can absorb. Power stations burning coal and other fossil fuels release huge amounts of carbon dioxide every day. Cars and motorbikes, powered mainly by petrol, add further pollutants to the air. Meanwhile, burning waste in the open air produces black soot, which also warms the atmosphere. Deforestation makes the situation worse, because trees that are cut down can no longer absorb carbon dioxide. Farming also plays a role: cattle produce methane, and rice fields, flooded for months, release the same gas. The consequences are already visible, with glaciers melting in many regions and the sea level rising along coastlines. In the Mekong Delta, salt water is entering farmland, leaving thousands of families unable to grow rice. Frightened by these changes, many governments have promised to cut down emissions and invest in renewable energy. Individuals can help as well by saving electricity, planting trees and choosing public transport whenever possible. Although no single action will solve the problem, millions of small choices, taken together, can slow the warming of our planet.
