Bridging the Generation Gap

242 từ7 câu hỏi
In many Vietnamese homes, three generations live under one roof, and this extended family can be both a blessing and a challenge. Grandparents usually value tradition, respect and hard work, whereas teenagers, who are digital natives, are curious about new ideas and online communities. These different views often lead to arguments, especially when the family talks about screen time. Parents believe that children must finish their homework before they go online, but many teenagers feel that such rules limit their freedom. Sociologists say that a generation gap is natural, because each generation grows up in a different world with its own experiences. A grandfather who survived a difficult childhood may think young people should be grateful, while his grandson simply wants to chat with friends. Neither side is completely right or wrong. Experts suggest that families should hold a weekly meeting to discuss their conflicts calmly. At such a meeting, everyone has to listen politely, and nobody must raise their voice. Honesty is essential, since children are more likely to follow rules that they have helped to create. Older relatives can also learn from the young; for example, a teenager can teach a grandmother how to make a video call to her friends abroad. In return, the grandmother may show the teenager how to cook a traditional dish or how to adapt to a new situation with patience. In this way, the gap between generations becomes a bridge rather than a wall.
