Few inventions have changed ordinary life as quickly as the smartphone, which now combines a computer, a camera and a telephone in a single device. Since the first models appeared, manufacturers have improved the processor, the display and the storage space almost every year. As a result, users can install thousands of applications and communicate with friends on the other side of the world. Researchers have also started using artificial intelligence to make phones smarter, so a modern handset can recognise voices and suggest routes. Some teachers have found that educational apps are suitable for helping students to practise vocabulary at home. Meanwhile, laboratory experiments have shown that 3D printing may soon produce cheap phone cases and even spare parts. Nevertheless, doctors have warned that spending too many hours looking at a screen can damage eyesight and disturb sleep. Parents have therefore begun limiting the time that children spend on their devices. Another problem is that the battery needs charging every night, and it often loses power after only two years of heavy use. Despite these drawbacks, most people refuse to give up their phones because they are too valuable in daily life. Experts agree that learning to use technology wisely is as important as inventing it.
